Mr. Mellen grew up Valdosta, GA and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Following his graduation from UNC in 1950, Mr. Mellen moved to Winston-Salem, NC and joined McLean Trucking Company as a management trainee. He spent his career at McLean where he rose through various managerial positions until, in 1980, he was named McLean's chairman and chief executive officer. Surviving are his wife, Claudia Fortune; son, Chris Fortune; and four grandchildren. Frank enjoyed his work and farming as well as spraying weeds. He loved his family and especially treasured time spent giving tractor rides to his grandkids and great grandkids. In addition to his parents, he was proceeded in death by two brothers, Robert Hepler and William Hepler. Survivors include his children, Michael Harrah of Asbury, WV, and Melissa Garrett of Roanoke, VA; brothers, Pat Harrah of Covington, VA, and Paul Harrah of Arizona; grandchildren, Stephanie, Sydnie, Jaime, Shannon, Holly, Ian and Maddy; great grandchildren, Mariah and Dylan; several nieces, and nephews.

"Vickie" Simmons of Clifton Forge; a grandson, Justin C. Sizemore and special friend, Ashley Burns; a great granddaughter, Kaleigh R. Sizemore; a sister-in-law, Beatrice Leighton; and a number of nieces and nephews. Neil was an accomplished golfer recording several "hole in ones" and maintaining a single digit handicap for many years.

After moving to Warm Springs he served on the board of the Virginia Hot Springs Corporation, on the vestry of St. Luke's Episcopal Church and was a founding member of Christ Church at Union Chapel where he also served on the vestry. He was an accomplished amateur golfer, enjoyed tennis, and traveled frequently in his later years. In Winston-Salem, Mr. Mellen was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where he served on the vestry, and a member of Old Town Club where he served as president.
William was a life-long member of Buena Vista Baptist Church. He not only served as a deacon but was involved in many aspects of church life as well.
